Visits From My Dutch Ancestors

When I was 4 years old, I lived in a very remote area in upstate NY, with my Mother.

My father only came home on weekends, and my brother was already away at college.

There were no other houses anywhere near, so I had no playmates, just my vivid imagination.

It was a magical place for me, I danced in the cornfields, gave concerts to the spiders on the porch, and played endlessly with my baby ducks.

But the magic really happened at night…Every night, after my mother left my room, after tucking me in, a group of spirits would flow from my window to come up to my bed. I had no reference of ghosts, they were just really friendly…laughing and talking in a language I didn’t understand. They would look at me, smile, and then speak or even sing to each other.

I felt so comforted by them, and couldn’t wait to see them each night.

I asked my mother who they were, and without even hesitating, she said…”Ohh those are all my Dutch relatives coming to see you". She was very proud of her Dutch heritage, and had been brought up on a Dutch settlement in Michigan. She spoke fluent Dutch, and she often sang Old Dutch Nursery rhymes to me, and told me stories of her parents arrival here in the late 1880’s as homesteaders.

I asked if I could move my bed into the middle of the room, so they could surround me, and she willingly complied. So, I spent many nights watching them.

We only lived in that house for a short time. By the time I turned 5 we moved away, and I never saw the spirits again. But I still felt their comfort.

I often think that when I am coming to the end of my days, they will return and guide me through to their dimension. I am not a religious person at all, but my Dutch Spirits gave me, at an early age, a lesson in living a creative life with no boundaries…to always explore all dimensions.
