Perseverance by Gay Finney and Swan Huntley.
Inside the box, there's a pillow that survived the recent fires in LA. The way it's smushed represents the way the fires forced us to surrender, at least for a time. Outside the box, there's a figure looking in on its contents. The hanging head of the figure is meant to suggest desperation, while the rest of it, its outstretched arms and buckled knees suggests determination. The way the figure is bound perhaps represents the way in which we are bound to our stuff and to our ways of living.
The comedy in this piece and the truth lies in the fact that the figure is made of natural and highly flammable materials, sticks and twine.
This is meant to evoke a sense of how little power we have over nature, both on a grand scale and on a small one.
